Now, let’s head to the bedroom. The bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom, and it should be at a comfortable height. A good rule of thumb is to have the top of the mattress at about the same height as the person’s knees. This makes it easier to get in and out of bed. And we should choose a firm mattress that provides good support for their backs. Storage in the bedroom is also crucial. You see, the elderly may have trouble reaching high shelves. So, we can install lower – level cabinets and drawers. Pull – out drawers are a great option as they’re easier to access compared to deep cabinets. And don’t forget about nightlights. Place some small, soft – glowing nightlights along the pathway from the bed to the bathroom. This helps them navigate in the dark without switching on bright lights that might disrupt their sleep.
The kitchen is another important area. For starters, the countertops should be at an adjustable height. Some elderly people may prefer to sit while cooking, so having a lower section on the countertop for sitting can be really helpful. And all the cabinets and drawers should have easy – to – use hardware. Instead of small, fiddly handles, opt for large, lever – style handles. They’re much easier to grip, especially for those with arthritis or limited hand strength. Also, make sure the appliances are within easy reach. The oven and microwave should be installed at a height that doesn’t require the elderly to stretch or bend too much. And don’t forget about the flooring. Choose a non – slip flooring option. A walk – in shower with a built – in bench is also a great idea. It allows the elderly to sit while showering, which is much safer and more comfortable. The toilet should be raised. You can use a raised toilet seat or choose a toilet with a higher profile. This makes it easier for them to sit down and stand up. And of course, the bathroom flooring needs to be non – slip. Consider using textured tiles or anti – slip mats.
Stairs can be a real challenge for the elderly. If the house has stairs, there are a few things we can do. First, install handrails on both sides of the stairs. The handrails should be sturdy and at a comfortable height. They should also run the full length of the stairs. You can also add some strip lights along the edges of the stairs. This helps to clearly define each step, reducing the risk of tripping. And if possible, consider installing a stairlift. It’s a great solution for those who have a hard time climbing the stairs.
Outdoor areas are also important. If there’s a garden, make sure the pathways are well – maintained and free of obstacles. Use gravel or paving stones that provide good traction. And add some seating areas around the garden. It gives the elderly a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Also, if there are any slopes in the garden, make them gentle and install handrails if necessary.
When we’re designing a whole house for the elderly, we also need to think about technology. For example, install a home security system with a panic button. In case of an emergency, the elderly can easily press the button to get help. And smart home technology can be really useful. You can set up voice – controlled lights, thermostats, and door locks. It makes it easier for them to control their living environment, especially if they have limited mobility.
